(From Goodreads) An extraordinarily beautiful Amish woman, a dangerous femme fatale, is the central figure in a story that reveals a dark side of Painters Mill and its seemingly perfect Amish world

A rainy night, an Amish father returning home with his three children, a speeding car hurtling toward them out of nowhere.

What at first seems like a tragic, but routine car accident suddenly takes on a more sinister cast as evidence emerges that nothing about the crash is accidental. But who would want to kill an Amish deacon and two of his children? He leaves behind a grieving widow and a young boy who clings to life in the intensive care wing of a hospital, unable to communicate. He may be the only one who knows what happened that night. Desperate to find out who killed her best friend’s husband and why, Kate begins to suspect she is not looking for a reckless drunk, but instead is on the trail of a cold blooded killer amid the residents of Painter’s Mill. It is a search that takes her on a chilling journey into the darkest reaches of the human heart and makes her question everything she has ever believed about the Amish culture into which she was born.

Her Last Breath by Linda Castillo is the fifth book in the Kate Burkholder series. When there’s a hit and run involving an Amish buggy, Kate Burkholder, the police chief of Painter’s Mill, is on the case.

I adore Linda Castillo’s Amish mysteries. They’re absolutely riveting in that they unlock a whole different world that I only ever see from a distance. Castillo’s knowledge about the Amish runs deep, which makes her novels seem very realistic and all the more captivating.

As with the other books in the Kate Burkholder series, Her Last Breath was well written and fast-paced. The opening chapters introduce the accident with the buggy and the murdered family, and it keeps you hooked from there.

Once the buggy murder is introduced, you follow Kate Burkholder as she works to unlock the mystery behind the murder. As with the other books in the series, there’s a dash of romance, some witty banter, and a whole lot of heart-pounding action. I’ve never been good at guessing the murderer in Castillo’s books, and Her Last Breath was no different. I would have never guessed the killer! I enjoy books that surprise me and keep me guessing, so this book was perfect.

I really liked the ending in Her Last Breath. All of Castillo’s books have heart-pounding endings, but this one in particular had me on the edge of my seat. When life and death hang in the balance, it’s always an exciting ride!

The characters in the Kate Burkholder series are wonderful. I feel like Her Last Breath continued to develop Kate’s character further, but the rest of the characters kind of took a backseat. I think that’s okay, since the characters have been well-developed over the last several books–I feel like I know all of them pretty well.

I’m thankful they kept the same narrator as they’ve used with the last four books, because she is wonderful! She has a great voice–very expressive–and her voice fits the character of Kate well.
